ENG 20400 American Literary Tradition II

An examination of the development of literature in the postbellum United States, from the period immediately following the Civil War to the present day. Discussion and readings will focus on the dominant and emergent themes and values of the times, as well as the myriad societal factors which contribute to this ever-changing tradition. Students will engage in research and write multiple essays, including a literary analysis using multiple academic sources. Readings place a particular emphasis on diverse voices, regionalism, literary realism and naturalism.
