SPE 21700 Freedom of Speech: Theories and Controversies Honors

When are words and images dangerous? What should we be allowed to say? These are some of the questions we will attempt to answer while exploring the major theories concerning speech and society. We will also consider whether these theories can help resolve contemporary controversies surrounding subjects such as hate speech, pornography, government surveillance and censorship. Students will engage in original research.
