SPE 21600 Freedom of Speech: Theories and Controversies

When are words dangerous? What should we be allowed to say? These are some of the questions we will attempt to answer while exploring the major theories concerning speech and society. We will also consider whether these perspectives can help resolve contemporary controversies such as hate speech, pornography, government surveillance and censorship.
