ART 13600 Race, Class and Gender in American Art

This course considers art as self-expression and a reflection of ideas about self, race, ethnicity, religion, society, gender, class and power. Students explore the issues and images revealing the diversity of American culture. The course probes the nature of art and examines how art functions to perpetuate societal values and stimulate innovation and change. The course addresses the basic narrative of American history: political, economic, social and cultural, including knowledge of unity and diversity and understanding America's evolving relationship with the rest of the world.
