HIS 11900 Civil Rights Movements in America 1945-1975 - Honors

The civil rights and Black Power movements directly challenged inequality and continue to influence ways that the politics of race manifest in America today. This course explores that history and examines how African American freedom struggles gave a framework to efforts for the rights of women, Native Americans, LGBTQ+ persons, prisoners, and other marginalized groups. Readings examine the key leaders, organizations, and philosophies associated with these movements. The impact of racism, discrimination, prejudice, misogyny, and homophobia within American society will also be explored. Students will engage in original research on themes within this curriculum as a signature assignment.
