EDU 14600 Introduction to Special Education

This course provides an overview of the education of children and youth with exceptionalities including: intellectual and physical disabilities, emotional and communication disorders, hearing and visual impairments, learning and ADHD disabilities, the autism spectrum, multiple handicaps and giftedness. Analysis of the full range of exceptionalities highlight their characteristics, prevalence and causes, with discussion of inclusive and collaborative intervention techniques. Topical content areas will also include a review of the historical, philosophical and legal foundations of special education, as well as current issues and trends. Fieldwork observation hours are required.
