CHM 25100 Fundamentals of Biochemistry with Lab

This is a fundamental biochemistry course designed to provide an overview of biochemistry concepts along with a hands-on laboratory for students preparing to enter the medical profession. It will introduce students to the general families of biomolecules that comprise the science of biochemistry. It will integrate biochemistry concepts with other chemical and biological disciplines. The course will introduce biological macromolecules, including the structure and function of proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids and membranes. Transport, enzyme mechanisms, bioenergetics, and metabolic pathways will be discussed. The lab will introduce basic biochemical methods of cloning, isolation, purification, and characterization of proteins.
