MCS 12700 Race, Class and Gender in American Art Honors

This course will examine the history of American art from Colonial times to the present examined through the lens of art. The course will consider how art functions to perpetuate societal values and to stimulate innovation and change. Emphasis will be placed on American art as an expression of ideas about race, ethnicity, religion, society, gender, class and power. The course addresses the basic narrative of American history: political, economic, social and cultural, including knowledge of unity and diversity and understanding America's evolving relationship with the rest of the world. Designed for Honors students, this course will be taught at an accelerated pace and requires completion of a research paper.
